There are 4 types of standards: for products, service, processes and management.
Product standards are national, European and international standards that establish agreements on the characteristics of merchandise. Result: safer and higher quality products for consumers.
Service standards ensure a consistent minimum quality of service provision. They also establish the rights and obligations of both the provider and the user.
Process standards contain the rules for the production, storage, packaging and testing of products.
Management standards help organisations manage their operations.
Each standard name is identically structured: first the code with an abbreviation and serial number, then the year edition and finally the title.
For example:
ISO 9001:2015: Quality management systems - Requirements
Code: ISO (abbreviation) 9001 (serial number)
Year Edition: 2015
Title: Quality management systems - Requirements
NBN S 21-100-1:2021 Fire detection and fire alarm systems - Part 1
Code: NBN S (abbreviation) 21-100-1 (serial number)
Annual Edition: 2021
Title: Fire detection and fire alarm systems - Part 1
ASTM C1569-22 Standard test method for wind resistance of concrete and clay roof tiles
Code: ASTM (abbreviation) C1569 (serial number)
