European Standardization Achievements: From the Lisbon Agenda to the EU 2020 Strategy
CEN and CENELEC held their 6th Annual Meeting on 2 June in Malta, under the auspices of the Malta Standards Authority (MSA). Presentations and panel discussions aimed to review the evolution of European standardization over the past decade and its adaptation to arising challenges in order to successfully respond to the objectives set by Europe for 2020.

Creation of a new CEN Project Committee on “Beauty, spa and wellbeing services”
Standardization in this field will provide a framework for the effective management of beauty services in order to promote quality, provide guidance on best practices and protect consumers from dangerous or unhygienic treatment practices.
It is proposed to create a Project Committee in order to work on a European Standard covering the management of a beautician business and the quality of service proposed to the customer. The scope of the standard would not include sales outlets and exclude leisure centres/gyms, swimming pools and hairdressing salons.

Sale of BEC Standards
Since September 15 (2008) some changes have taken place in the sale of BEC Standards. The sales department of the NBN will no longer be in charge of the sale of standards belonging to the following series:
NBN EN 55000, NBN EN 60000, NBN EN 61000, NBN EN 62000, NBN EN 80000, NBN EN 100000 and NBN HD.
We therefore kindly ask you to order standards from these series directly through the “shopping basket” of the Belgian Electrotechnical Committee (BEC) website, the web address of which is:
http://www.ceb-bec.be
However, the corresponding IEC standards will still be sold from our Foreign standards department normes.etrangeres@nbn.be.
Use of equipment for the tracking of fever:
A new ISO technical report has just been published
Following the recent pandemic alert for the A/H1N1 flu, thermal detectors have been installed in several airports. These decisions were taken within the scope of activation and reinforcement of the monitoring of passengers in transit areas.
ISO, on the other hand, has just published a technical report concerning the use of medical equipment in the detection of fever to contain the spread of infectious diseases as well as to avoid the development of pandemics.To lessen the impact of a pandemic, save lives whilst ensuring continuity of the services are essential objectives in planning the containment of influenza viruses.

The ISO 14050:2009 facilitates the implementation of the ISO 14000 series in 12 languages
An ISO survey published last year showed that up to the end of 2007 at least 154 572 certificates of compliance with ISO 14001:2004 (requirements for environmental management systems) had been issued in 148 countries.
By analyzing these figures, and in view of the global context and the wide application of the ISO 14000 series of standards, it is now clearer than ever that the publication of ISO 14050 is crucial to the development of this series of standards
