Standardization is the process in which agreements are made between interested parties concerning the specific characteristics of a product, service or procedure. This process is open, transparent and focuses on consensus.
Due to a number of technical and social developments, standards are becoming more and more important:
- national and European legislation increasingly refers to standards, e.g. environmental legislation, construction and product directives, specifications in public procurement etc.
- standards are the basis for quality systems
- in certain cases, it is essential to prove that standards are applied, enhancing the role of certification
- companies want to benchmark themselves against Best Practices and standards constitute a reference in this respect
At Belgian level NBN - the Belgian Bureau for Standardisation - is the national organisation responsible for the drafting and publication of standards in Belgium.
