Our world leaders are meeting at the 27th UN Climate Conference (COP27) in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt, to explore developing an action plan to address climate change.

ISO is also present at the summit. It’s there to stress how international standards are the perfect means to translate climate agreements into action. To support its position, ISO launched the Net Zero Guidelines at COP27 IWA 42: Guidelines for 'Net Zero'.

What is IWA 42?

International Workshop Agreement (IWA) 42 is a document that provides a universal definition of ‘net zero’. It provides recommendations for a global, common approach to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions. And it does so through voluntary initiatives, standards, policies, and national and international regulations.

What does net zero mean?

Net zero is a state in which total greenhouse gas emissions are less than or equal to the emissions removed from the atmosphere. When we reach net zero, global warming will stop. And that’s necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.
