To make our world a livable place again, the United Nations developed 17 sustainable development goals: the so-called Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs.
This ambitious action plan to promote peace and prosperity, fight poverty and protect the planet by 2030 is essential for the sustainable development of our world.
But truly changing the world is a difficult task. It requires the commitment of all levels of our society: governments, the business world, and citizens. Fortunately, standards are a useful tool in helping us achieve these 17 goals.
In 2015, the 193 member states of the United Nations adopted a major plan of action that replaced the Millennium Development Goals. The ultimate objective? A world in which ecological, social and economic needs are better balanced. A total of 17 sustainable development goals across five domains (people, planet, prosperity, peace, and cooperation) should ensure a better world by 2030. The plan is recognised worldwide as a crucial step towards the future sustainability of the world.

ISO standards contribute to all 17 SDGs. ISO standards for management systems are useful tools for successfully putting the goals into practice.
Governments, industry and consumers can all benefit from the use of ISO standards. Standards support the three pillars of sustainable development: economic prosperity, social inclusion and environmental sustainability.
As globally recognised guidelines based on international cooperation, ISO standards are essential tools for achieving all 17 SDGs.
Everyone can benefit from standards and use them to develop our world sustainably. SMEs, Governments and educational institutes can all benefit from the use of standards.
On our standards platform, you can find all the standards that contribute to achieving the SDGs.
