Will you participate in the new standards committee on hydrogen technologies?

April 15 we organized our "Hydrogen kick-off," about the standards committee around hydrogen technologies. The aim was to inspire attendees to participate in this and help write standards around hydrogen. It was a successful event where some professionals effectively signed up immediately. Are you also taking part in this standards committee?

The energy transition is more topical than ever. In the search for sustainable solutions, we quickly arrive at hydrogen, a new and, for many, unexplored territory. "The energy transition? That's about more than just electricity," knew participant Johan De Wasch, site manager for Veolia in Bruges, Izegem and Ostend.

"Right now we are not working on hydrogen yet, but I am convinced it will become inevitable in the future. I enrolled because I want to learn more about hydrogen technologies and the existing standards. In standards about electricity I am completely at home, but this matter is new to me."

The benefits of participating in standards development

Belgian standards only exist thanks to the motivated participation of Belgian professionals on the committees. An open invitation to all participants, and to you. Werner Neuville, general manager of BtecCH, has experience in standards development and said he recommends it to everyone. We briefly sum up the benefits he indicated for you:

"Participating yourself in thinking about and writing standards has two good reasons," he explained. "I find it interesting that you help determine the right direction. You are also always keeping up with current events AND you know what the future holds."

For him, therefore, it was important to be present at the event. "Going forward, I believe in an and-and story. Hydrogen is not the only, ultimate solution, but I am sure it is a big part of the future. We're at a tipping point and it's important to be there right away."

Would you like to participate in a standards committee, but you're not quite sure what that entails? In our expert training we give you all the info you need.

How will you work efficiently? What is expected of you? And where can NBN support you? All these questions will be answered for you.

Translating international standards into Belgian practice

Each participant received a basic course in standards development to build toward the topic of the day: standards around hydrogen. "Hydrogen is a promising option for a sustainable future," Alexandre echoed.

"It is only a matter of time before the use of hydrogen becomes a major link in our economy. For many organizations, this will create opportunities. And it is not always clear to them that ISO is developing new standards around this. From NBN, we want to raise that awareness. More even: we want to translate the standards relevant to our national market into Belgian standards as well."

The international standards committee brings together all international expertise related to hydrogen technologies. NBN coordinates the Belgian committee, which brings together our national expertise on hydrogen technologies.

Participating in standards development yourself? During the short break the participants talked about this in depth. Over a cup of coffee they got to know each other and immediately exchanged contact details. Or how an NBN event is not just about knowledge, but also about expanding your network. A network of which you can be a part, by the way.

Being along is the message

During the reception, the speakers, NBN staff and other attendees chatted some more. With interesting conversations as a result.

"With Siemens Energy, we are active in all transition topics, including, of course, electrolysis production and complete projects with electrolysis," echoed Piet Van der Biest, business development manager at Siemens Energy. "It is difficult to find standards and norms around hydrogen. I found it very interesting to get a better idea of that and to hear what is currently going on in terms of standards development."

Erwin Theys, business development manager of Eneria was also full of praise for the initiative. "Our generators replace the typical diesel generator. However, we regularly come up against the overly strict Flemish laws and regulations. We need good legislation and standards. I found all the information I heard here fascinating. I was particularly interested in the working group that is working on utilization. What is coming up? Where are we headed? In this matter, being along for the ride is the message!"
