The energy source of tomorrow
Each year, the industrial sector consumes more than 50 million tons of hydrogen for various applications. As this is increasing, the industry is working to increase the share of green hydrogen - produced from renewable energy sources - which will enable a gradual decarbonization of the sector.
Hydrogen has also proven to be a convenient and clean energy source for large-scale transportation systems, whether for freight (road), public transport or maritime transport.
Not without standardization
An energy transition to the widespread use of hydrogen cannot occur without ensuring interoperability of systems and components and safety during use.
Standardization of hydrogen technologies aims to achieve that for the benefit of users and end users, and ultimately the environment. Through its dedicated international technical committee, ISO develops international standards that contribute to a successful, clean and safe transition to a hydrogen-based energy system.
What is the hydrogen technologies committee working on?
Experts join forces in the standards committee to develop standards related to (but not limited to):
- Fuelling Protocols
- Fuelling stations
- Fuel Quality
- Refuelling connection devices
- Hydrogen generators
- Materials for stationary storage
- Safety of hydrogen systems
It also covers the standardization of large-scale hydrogen energy systems and applications, including aspects of testing, certification, sustainability and placement.
Who are we looking for for this?
Anyone with an interesting perspective on hydrogen technologies can participate in the Belgian Hydrogen Technologies standards committee. Thus, we are looking for experts in many aspects of hydrogen technologies - whether large companies or SMEs, manufacturers, users or distributors, researchers, authorities, etc. Knowledge of standards is not necessary.
Would you like to help develop standards yourself? But would you rather learn more about it first? Then follow the free webinar "Standardization: The basics." There we will give you more insight into what standards development entails.
What standards committees are there and when do they meet?
- The international standards committee ISO/TC 197 brings together international expertise to address issues related to hydrogen technology.
- ISO/TC 197 meets once to twice a year. Next meeting: December 2024.
- The Belgian commission NBN/I197 brings together all Belgian stakeholders with expertise in hydrogen technologies. The committee closely follows and contributes to the work of ISO. Anyone in Belgium can participate.
- NBN/I197 meets twice a year. Next meetings: 04/12/2024.
