Standards are agreements and guidelines that form the basis for quality, safety, sustainability and efficiency in various industries. Well-known examples are the ISO 9001 quality standard and the A4 paper size standard. "Standards describe the best way to make products, test them, provide services, realize processes and organize management," Ellen Bartholomeeusen clarifies. She is Sales Manager at NBN, which develops, publishes and distributes standards in Belgium.
Standards are the result of collaborations between experts from sector federations, companies, academics, NGOs and governments. The final consensus on what should count as a standard, including all standards specifications and criteria, is officially recorded and protected by copyright. Therefore, you cannot simply share standards on the intranet among colleagues, via e-mail with suppliers or on the website for customers.
Fortunately, NBN offers several formulas for using standards in compliance with copyright. "Whether it's one standard for one user, a comprehensive collection for the entire organisation or something completely different: through our onlineNBN platformyou can easily access Belgian, European or international standards. For example, we have subscription packages that allow the management of standards collections of up to several thousand standards," Ellen explains.
Besides working "copyright compliant" with standards, Ellen sees other benefits of subscribing through the NBN platform:
